Odey inspires MFM past Plateau Utd

Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) top scorer Stephen Odey was the star of the fixture on Matchweek 14 as his team MFM FC saw off leaders Plateau United 2-1 on Sunday.

Odey scored both goals to take his total for the season to 10 with Peter Eneji's strike sandwiched in between his goals for MFM.

Odey as well as Sikiru Olatunbosun and Chukwuka Onuwa were restored to the MFM FC startlist after head coach Fidelis Ilechukwu excused them from the trip to Wikki Tourists last week.

Plateau United head coach Kennedy Boboye, serving a touchline ban, watched from the stands while Daniel Itodo, famed for his long throw-ins, was out injured.

Adekunle Adegboyega and Julius Emiloju had chances to put MFM in front in the early minutes but could not make them count.

Odey scored the first of his two goals in added time of the first half when he received Olatunbosun's pass around the edge of Plateau United's box before picking his angle past John Gaadi.

Eneji equalised for Plateau United 17 minutes after the restart after he benefited from a fine move with MFM failing to clear their lines.

MFM wrapped up the contest two minutes to time when Odey scored from the spot after a goal-bound Olatunbosun was bumped into by Saleh Hamisu in the box leaving referee Emmanuel Ikeobi with the decision of pointing to the spot.

Ilechukwu's men have now won their last eight home games in a row and now move into second place on 24 points, one behind leaders Plateau United.

Victor Yakubu and Peter Ambrose scored for Wikki as they defeated Katsina United 2-1. Destiny Ashadi's strike had temporarily put the scoreline at 1-1 at the start of the second half before Ambrose's late winner.

Mfon Udoh scored his first goal on the road this season for Enyimba as the Peoples Elephant were denied their first away win by Stone Evbuomwan's goal for ABS FC from the spot with seven minutes to full time. The game ended 1-1 at the Kwara State Stadium in Ilorin.

Kano Pillars enjoyed a routine 2-0 win over Gombe United with Musa Najare scoring both goals in the second half.

El-Kanemi Warriors made life tough for Cup holders FC Ifeanyiubah as goals from Isiaka Olawale and Ibrahim Babangida cancelled out a two-goal lead held by their hosts after the first half.

But FC Ifeanyiubah substitute Ifeanyi Onuigbo scored the winner in added time of the second half from the spot to ensure that the Nnewi club emerged 3-2 winners.

A first-half goal from the spot by Ifeanyi Okoye was enough for Niger Tornadoes to edge Akwa United 1-0. Akwa United had to finish the game with 10 men in the last 17 minutes when Emmanuel Ariwa was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Former champions 3SC extended their run of no wins to seven games as they played out a 0-0 draw with Abia Warriors before their fans. The draw keeps in the bottom-three with 13 points from 13 matches.

Lobi Stars and Nasarawa United also ended their match-up without scoring any goals. Lobi should have wrapped things up late in the game but their leading scorer Kingsley Eduwo failed to convert an 81st-minute penalty.
